Singles Tournament - July 23rd, 2017

The 32
Well folks, it happened.  These 32 insane souls did battle against each other and whittled themselves down until only one person was left standing.  And who was that magical warrior?  Who managed to outlast everyone else, outsmart all others, outplay all comers?

It was...JONATHAN AND YODA!!!

"King of the Ball - 1992"

That's right - Jonathan was the big winner.  In our largest field ever of Duelers and entries, he brought home the historic win.  He took down Alex R./Anakin, who tore through the Carbon Freezing Chamber and had home court advantage in the final but was quickly silenced by Jonathan's Yoda.

JD placed two characters into the final four, winning the Throne Room region (Count Dooku) and the Kamino Platform (Obi-Wan) but was unable to recover from a sub-three minute defeat to Alex in the first final four game of the night.  Other highlights included Curtis placing three characters in the elite eight and Ian getting that far too with Mace Windu.

Thanks to all who came out - here are some more pics to document the fun!

Preview: Singles Tournament, July 23rd, 2017

Folks, we went and did something completely ridiculous.  Ri-darn-diculous.  We looked at last year's tournament, with 16 Duelers and 64 entries, and thought to ourselves..."how can we make this more insane?"

The answer was to go big.  REALLY BIG.  As in, double the size of the tournament.  Double the Duelers, double the entries, double the chaos.

We did it.  We have 32 Duelers with 128 entries.  But...only one of those 32 Duelers and only one of those 128 entries will be crowned CHAMPION.  Will it be you?

THE DRAFT:

With 32 Duelers, good draft position is a must.  Nobody was luckier than Gerhard, who got randomly slotted at #1 and picked Obi-Wan Kenobi for his first character.  Obi-Wan was the hot pick, as all ten of his character entries were chosen by the 16th pick!  Here's the order the characters came off the board:

1.  Obi-Wan Kenobi
2.  Yoda
3.  Anakin Skywalker
4.  Darth Maul
5.  Count Dooku
6.  Mace Windu
7.  Emperor Palpatine
8.  Luke Skywalker
9.  Boba Fett
10.  Darth Vader
11.  Jango Fett
12.  Han Solo

Eight characters had 11 entries each, while Obi-Wan, Anakin, Boba, and Maul had 10 each.

THE BRACKET

At 128 entries, we had two move the bracket to two different slides!

Emperor's Throne Room and Kamino Regions

Carbon Freezing Chamber and Geonosis Arena Regions
Each Dueler has one entry per region.  Last year Curtis was successful enough to land BOTH characters in the final match!  That's crazy and will not be tolerated this year.  I'm putting a bounty on his head!  #robthehutt

KEY MATCH-UPS:

Emperor's Throne Room - All eyes will be on Alex C.'s Obi-Wan Kenobi as he battles Bob's Darth Maul in the recreation of the Duel of the Fates from Episode I.

Kamino Platform - Nobody knew just how personal a singles tournament could get...it turns blood vs. blood!!!  That's right, Brannon (Anakin) must battle HIS OWN SISTER LorAnn (Han) in a fight that could irreparably damage their family bond.  So sad.

Carbon Freezing Chamber - What happens when pure offense meets pure defense?  We'll finally know the answer when Sam's Yoda goes toe to toe with Nick's Darth Maul, on the scariest playing board in the tournament.  Shield your eyes!

Geonosis Arena - Curtis is the defending champion, and Obi-Wan Kenobi was his first character pick.  He begins his title defense with a tough first round battle against Austin's Mace Windu.  Can Curtis win two years in a row???

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I just have to say it again.  THIRTY-TWO PEOPLE ARE PLAYING EPIC DUELS ON SUNDAY!!!  I can't believe it.  It...will...be...EPIC!!!!!!!!!

Sunday, 1PM, North Village Community Center.  See you then!
